March 1st is actually the celebration of the beginning of resistance to Japanese occupation. On March 1st, 1919, demonstrations sprung up all over Korea.

Independence Day is August 15, the day when Japan ceded control to the Allies (I’m about 90% sure that’s what happened).

“beginning of resistance to Japanese occupation”

An armed population resists.

An unarmed population submits under protest.
